Outstanding Deposit

I have been waiting for over a month for Avis to cancel an authorisation on my account which was held against my account as a deposit for a rental. When I called their offices I was told that it usually takes about 8 weeks to clear if one uses a cheque card, a fact which I was never informed of when I was given the vehicle. I then called their call centre and was advised that they would send an instruction to their merchant bank to cancel the debit and I should expect the money in my account after 48 hours. After 48 hours I didn't receive the money so I called them again and was told that the money was released onto my account and I should call my bank. I called my bank and told them the story. My bank advised me that they would not be able to make the cancellation as they had not received anything from the merchant bank. They told me that I should request Avis to copy them in the request to cancel they sent to their merchant bank. I called Avis again and asked them to email me the correspondence, I was told that this was not permitted and instead I should email proof that I have this balance outstanding on my account. Needless to say I still haven't received my money.
