Cannot cancel cheque account

I decided to cancel my FNB cheque account as I was not getting the benefit of a second cheque account that I thought I would, and I wanted to reduce my monthly fees by cancelling the account. I went into the branch to do this, but was told this was not possible due to an oustanding merchant fee that was not collected. The transaction was done in February 2013, meaning it has been outstanding for almost 4 months. I was told that the branch cannot help me and I should visit the merchant to ensure they take payment.

I am not prepared to visit a merchant who has taken payment from me already. This is not my responsibility, it is the bank's. The result of this is that I now have to pay additional bank fees for an account that I do not wish to use. I find this terribly unprofessional, and not in line with all the advertising about how good FNB is. Seems they are great when they want to take your money, but not so much when we want to cancel our business with them!

I want this resolved ASAP.
