I have had a small student loan with Standard Bank for the past 5 years. Have never missed a payment. In January, I went in to the Hatfield branch to take over the payment from my sponsor. The consultant (very friendly) and I worked out a rate and a debit order was set up. I was happy with the deal.
Then, out of the blue, a month later, I receive a call from Newton Attorneys, saying my account has been handed over to them for legal action. At first I thought it was a.
I went in to the branch again and the consultant (really helpful) told me that indeed it was the bank's fault and she didn't understand why the debit order didn't go through. However, my monthly payment now went up with R200. She phoned the attorneys and they told me in an unfriendly manner and with a lot of jargon that basically I was in a lot of trouble and I don't have a right to enquire about this. So I accepted it, set up a new debit order and left.
I feel a little offended because I never got a phone call or any correspondence from Standard Bank and then hours of trying to sort the mess and being threatened with legal action.
I'm moving my loan and cheque account over to FNB
