Termination of a life cove

I took a life cover with Sanlam in 1993. When I checked the status in 2009 I was told that the policy was cancelled on the basis that the 1st premium was never paid. This was shocking as it was never communicated. I was surprised because to me this was not legible for the cancelation of the policy. I was never refunded of my premiums that were paid then. I need further explanation in this regarded and be reimbursed the premiums paid.
