Removal of money without consent or notifcation

Standard Bank removed money out of my account to pay bank fees for an account that I had requested to be closed. I was never notified of these fees nor contacted. The staff did not update my details after I had taken all the relevant documents to do so. Their response is " We apologize for the inconvenience". How can you take money out of someone's account without consent or notification?
