Homeloan-linked cheque account opened as a savings

We were initially very impressed with FNB granting us a 100% bond on our new property and their speedy reply to our homeloan enquiries. Little did we know what we were letting ourselves in for.

Our first bond installment was supposed to be debited from our homeloan-linked cheque account on 1 July. We opened the account well in advance (SPECIFICALLY requesting a cheque account and specifying that it was for the express purpose of our homeloan debits). We made sure that the full bond payment amount was in the account way in advance, so when the debit order was returned we followed up immediately. After more than an hour on the phone to the FNB call centre and being bounced back and forth between departments, we finally established that the "homeloan-linked" account was in fact opened as a savings account. And no debit orders can be processed from a savings account...

So now we are stuck with a savings account we didn't want, a first homeloan installment that wasn't paid on time, and a great amount of frustration at the inefficiency of this bank that was rated as one of the best in the world. Plus, we'll have to take time off work to go into a branch AGAIN and open another account!
