Card at ATM becomes my propblem

On 26th May I went to Std Bank Middelburg Branch, Market Street to draw money at the ATM out of my debit account. I inserted my card and entered my PIN as instructed. After nothing happened for a long period I tried to cancel the operation but the ATM failed to give me my card back. All this happened just before 11:00. I live on a farm 35km outside Middelburg. I went home and phoned the card stop number to report the incident. It was too late. Somebody already withdrew R5000.00 out of my account and used it at SPAR Wonderpark for the amount of R378.50. They stopped my card. I went on Monday 27 May to the Hendrina branch and completed the necessary paperwork. The lady told me that I will get feedback within 3 working days. On day 5 I went to Witbank Stb where they informed me that I will only receive feedback by the 13th of June. I received a call on the 16th of June where they told me that I can not claim the money from Stb as I took too long to report the incident to the cardstop number. I live on a farm, NOT IN TOWN! Is it not Stb that should provide me the security to draw money in a safe manner? Can somebody please tell me how a client of over 40 years be treated like this???
