Claiming Physical Damage that wasn't there

Last week I handed a Sony phone in to MTN's service centre in Midrand for a warranty claim. They are now telling me it is not under warranty due to physical damage to the screen. When I handed it in there was no physical damage to the screen, so either MTN damaged it or Sony are trying to wangle out of a warranty claim.
