SAA Baggage loss/claims, useful or useless?

I was on flight SA 306 from Cape Town departing 07:00 and arriving 09:00. I had to get my connecting flight to Harare on SA 22. When I got to the international side I realized I left my I pad in the front pocket of seat 12E.

I immediately phoned my secretary to phone SAA and that was at 09H01. She gave me the number of Baggage claims/loss. I phoned numerous times only to hear "nothing has been handed in yet". I begged her to send someone to the plane, needless to say nothing happened. She said I must phone back in 15min again.

I phoned again only to hear the same thing, "nothing has been handed in yet". Again I asked if somebody was sent to the aeroplane and again she said nothing was handed in yet.
I understand that it is my responsibility to remember my personal belongings but if I realized it the next day only I will completely except my loss but realizing it literally minutes after I left it and with the chance of getting it back much better, I can only blame SAA's baggage department for my personal loss. Forgetting something is human but not having control over a situation borders on incompetence!

The fact that my I Pad was in flight mode I could not track it!
