Early contract change resulted in airtime loss

I recently assisted my mom in getting a new phone & package on a vodacom contract that has been in use for MORE than 15 years. As my mom still had a large number of free minutes left on the contract we specifically asked if the new package would only come in effect on the 1st of January and we were assured that this was true. Yesterday she received an sms to say it would happen on the 31st at which point she called the local vodacom shop and was told it would only be transferred on the night of the 31st. Today, however, she tried to check her balance only to see that the package HAD been changed already. She contacted the vodacom shop again and was told that when there are large amounts of transfers to be done they may be done earlier. She has now lost in excess of 100 free minutes which she wanted to use to call her family today & wish them a happy new year. I am absolutely livid that after all the questions & reassurances she has now lost all of that time.
