Loose my airtime

I have a vodacom topup 315 contract which expires in a few days time, i do not require this contract and want to convert it to prepaid, i have about R1400 worth of airtime accumulated. iv been advised by the call centre agent that i will loose all this airtime if i convert. why should this be?? i have paid for this airtime and it is legally mine. why cant i keep it?
