PORTING 7 days and counting

Good day
I have seen advertising which provide quick and simple steps to port.
My close friend has been trying to port to MTN from Vodacom since Sunday.
The first attempt was done using the SMS option provided on the MTN Blog web site
The second attempt failed visiting a MTN Store in Montclair, Durban.
My friend is phone-less since the past weekend.
WAS the advertising a sales trick?
Is porting as simple as per advertising?
Or is the persons responsible for the process not serious?
The local MTN shop has convinced my Friend that the SIM cards were faulty, .
They have now started the same process with 4 (FOUR) cards. (Montclair MTN)
