Contract End Issues

I currently have a contract with Autopage for more than 4 years and my current contact ends as of 28/08/2013. I called the Call Centre to have this number converted to a Pre Paid option. I was informed by the Call Centre that this was not possible when my contract ended but rather only if I gave in a month's notice.

This means that Autopage will automatically convert my number to a Month to Month Contract (without my official consent) and I would be liable for the subscription costs even after the contract had ended. Therefore if I had not called in, my contract would still be active and I would still be responsible for the Contract .. which had had supposedly ended. The earliest that my number could be converted to a Pre Paid option would be on 28/09/2013.

Now I am liable for the costs for up until 28 September 2014 which I find outrageous. How can someone continue pay for a Contract that has already ended?
