Whats the point of this free air-time

A friend of mine sent me air- time on Monday afternoon, I uploaded the air-time then I received R7.50 free air- time. I started making phone calls in-order to use up this free air-time before mid-night. On Tuesday I added another R15 air- time and my air-time was topped up but i did not use al of it, i used it yesterday but not all of it. Today when I waked up, R15 has been removed from my account. I called 173 and I was told that MTN took my R15 because i did not use the 'free' air-time. i was told that the new rule is that, when you buy air-time and receive free air-time, one has to use up his/her air-time before using the free one. What i do not understand is that last week i bought R30 air-time and i received the free air-time, and i used the free one and the following no air-time was with-drawn from my account. Who did MTN inform about this change, is in it that they suppose to let us know before implementing something? when did this new rule of theirs become effective? I have always had people complain about MTN but this i do not understand. What's the point of this free air-time? why introduce something that you cant keep up with. I don't want this free air-time in my account
