Cancelled contract

I had a 3 year contract with Planet fitness (fully paid up) that expired in November 2012. Despite cancelling the contract telephonically, I received an SMS that I was required to make a monthly payment in December. I went in on the 2nd of January 2013 and spoke with Thabo Mphuthi. He pointed me to an automatic renewal clause hidden in the debit order details section of the contract that said the contract should be cancelled with 20 days notice in writing. I was unhappy and pointed out that it was illegal to conceal a significant clause in the small print under and within an unrelated heading, and he agreed and told me they had amended their contracts since. I confirmed via email (02 Jan 2013) that I wanted the contract cancelled and that he had agreed to come back to me on the matter of the one month of outstanding fees. I explained that since I paid cash upfront for 3 years I has no bank details etc so he would need to send me and invoice for paymen. He agreed to check with the club manager when he was back from leave. I did not hear from him despite following up. I was just informed that I have been handed over to a collection agency and I would like to know how this is possible
