I requested a copy of my contract, and was sent an illegible version by Virgin's web admin, and requested another copy, in order to verify their cancellation provisions. Due to changing needs I decided to exercise my right in line with the Consumer Protection Act to terminate my contract; providing 20 days notice.
When I did so I was informed that I would be required to pay an amount of R2400 in order to do so.
While the Consumer Protection Act provides the vendor with the right to charge a fair and reasonable cancellation fee, this amount requested is hardly fair considering that an annual subscription at two other gyms (Sports Science and The Gym) costs the same.
I would like to exercise my right to cancel the contract in line with the Consumer Protection Act, the intent of which is to protect consumers from unscrupulous practices such as these. I request that the cancellation fee be reduced to a reasonable amount to effect the termination of contract.
