Illing on closed accounts

I opened an account with Planet Fitness and decided to close it when my Discovery benefit was no longer active. When I opened the account I also opened an account for my girlfriend at the time. When closing the account I requested they close both accounts which they said they would do if I paid a certain amount on each membership. I agreed to this and paid the dues. Upon completion of payments they confirmed telephonically that the accounts were closed. Asked them for written confirmation which they refused to provide. Three years later after not a single communication from Planet Fitness they call to say that my girlfriend owes R15 000-00. How is this possible she did not at any point sign a contract with Planet Fitness (even at inception) and they confirmed both contracts were terminated. When we asked the to confirm in writing they said calls are recorded and that is sufficient and they were not obligated to send a letter. Are they doing this to other people. This is and on a mass scale. The Owner/CEO is running a company that has no proper controls if at all they allow such things to happen.
