I started my routine with a bike warm up & then proceeded to the weight section.
I picked up weights & after I competed a set, I noticed blood on my hands. I immediately went to the disinfectant spray and wiped my hands. I checked my hands for any cuts and had none. I discovered that the handle of the weight bar was full of blood as well another equipment barbell bar.
This is not acceptable. HIV and AIDs is a huge epidemic in this South Africa and I am extremely disappointed at the unhygienic state of equipment.
The second most upsetting thing was no one was on the floor. I had to go downstairs looking for someone to attend to the matter. A staff member I confronted about the incident had the audacity to tell me that if you knew it was covered in blood why did you touch it?
The staff member was clueless as what to do. While downstairs trying to get attention, one of the members of the staff asked me can I help you? So I told him that the weight handle bar was covered in blood and was dangerous unhygienic and unacceptable. Not giving any attention to me, he quickly moved his attention to the people entering the gym. I was furious & no one was taking this matter seriously.
