Do not understand

I bought an Ellies cable that connects a communal ariel in my complex to connect to my TV. When I got home I realised I had gotten the wrong one, needed a similar ended one. This costs about R30. Yesterday I asked my girlfriend to go exchange it for the right one. She was told at customer care that since I used my debit card I have to come in so that they can refund the whole thing, then I will have to re-buy the right one again. And all I am looking for is for an exchange. Now the question is, since I incur bank charges on my swipes, are they going to also refund the charge that I have already incurred so that I can re-swipe my card again to incur the same charge? But all of this can be avoided if I can just exchange the cord for the right one because they are the same price. Other retails do this; I do not understand why Game will make have to pay double bank charges for a mere R30 item.
Is the staff so incompetent that they do not know how things work or is it just the way you do things nowadays because it is kind of dumb to go through the whole refund process when I only looking to exchange for a similar item!!!
What is going on here, did I miss something??
