I recently took my IPAD in to update the software. This is something I didn't want to do on my own account due to lack of knowledge and the fear of losing information. The gentleman assisting me promised me several times that they will back-up the information before the update will be done.
However when I arrived the next day I was informed that unfortunately my whole iPad was whipped, that includes photo's and work related documents stored, I even had to re-install some apps and set up my mail account again.
This was big personal loss and I lost information that will not be recovered.
