Product Bought But Only Works In Other Country

I bought a Philips HDMI DVD player. And when I got home, the product is not for use in South Africa. I do not understand WHY a product can be sold in a county that it is not used in. We paid for the product only received the product after I had paid for it. The sales consultant or the person who assisted us did not inform us of the product region and it also did not display it on the shelf where the product was displayed.
