Cellphone faulty

We bought a cellphone on the 18th, we wrapped it and gave it to my godchild on christmas morning, she tried to download whattsapp but could not, I called vodacom and they tried but no luck, today I went to vodacom at carnival mall and was told that we should take the phone back as it was faulty. I called mr van niekerk and after many many many calls were told that the 7 days guarantee had expired and that they would sent the phone in for repairs. My godchild is going back to her mother in newcastle on sunday. Was I suppose to open the cellphone on the 18th to check that it works and wrap it again, I explained this to them but they were adoment that they will not replace the phone, this is not the kind of service that you would expect from the cna or is it?
