Unwilling to provide goods or refund

Dear HelloPeter Team,
I am usually a non-complainer always turning the other cheek, but I started to realize it is costing me a lot of money!
I visited Kloofsig Spar on 24 Jan 2013 and purchased some groceries together with a Animal Talk Magazine for R29.95. The cashier packed the goods in the shopping bag and off I went.
When I got home, the magazine was nowhere to be found and not packed with the rest of the groceries.
As I know I go by this route every week, I decided to stop at the shop the following week to follow up with the store.
Got there on 29 Jan 2013 (5 days later), and the representative tells me the following:
"Coming back 5 days later after not receiving something is suspicious", so what do you suggest sir? That I am dishonest?
"You should have phoned us" To who's expense? Mine as well?
"It is company policy" - Well I am not educated in Spar's policies and it is definitely not printed on your till slip either for me to acknowledge.
