Not informed of fixed 2 year contract

We signed up with ADT last year August when we moved into our house in Durbanville.
We decided on ADT rather than Basset Security as they seemed more visable and the better option over all.

A year later our circumstances have changed and we are emigrating to New Zealand.
We cancelled more then a month in advance and only 2 weeks after phoning ADT every day to see if they received my cancellation email, I received an email saying that we are liable for a 30% penalty on the remaining term and that we had a fixed 2 year contract.

We were never informed of the fixed term by the sales agent and we can't afford to pay the penalty as we need every cent for NZ as the Rand has depreciated so much that it is now R8 to a NZ$.

It just feels like when you decide to emigrate to a new county to have a better future, SA seems to go out of its way to you over!

I think ADT should inform all new clients about the fixed 2 year period and put it in bold writing so that they abide by the transparency clause of the CPA!
