PS3 stopped working after update

About two months ago I did the suggested updates provided by the official Sony network, specifically the update VERSION 4.46. Once I installed the new update I started to notice my PS3 was taking strain and would go to a black screen. Over about a week or so it just stopped working, all the power lights and eject button work still.
I called the Sony helpline and they were fully aware of this update issue and said that a lot of people had been calling into report it. They said Sony was issuing a new update to fix the bugs in 4.46.As per instruction from the helpline I downloaded the new update and put it onto a usb flash and tried to reinstall the update through the safety mode feature, this made no difference.
Finally the help advisor said to me that it looks like there's nothing they can do about this, even though they admitted it was a worldwide fault. His suggestion was that I bring in my now broken ps3 and pay Sony R1500 to get a new machine. This is unacceptable I have lost all my paid for add ons as well and expected to pay for something that I didn't break, they were also supposed to send me details of where to take my ps3 and how to backup my data and add ons a month ago :(
