Kreepy Krauly refusal to refund

I purchased a new Kreepy Krauly from Makro, Alberton on Sunday 12th January.
When I connected it in my swimming pool it didn't work properly. It is sluggish, can't climb the walls, gets stuck and only moves around the outside of the pool. It also "hovers". On Friday 17th January I tried to return it to Makro for a refund I was informed by Makro that Kreepy Krauly do not accept returns of machines and gave me a telephone number to phone. I phoned the gentleman who said I had the wrong valve in the weir, I then bought the "correct" one - still no success. I had a "pool man" come out and he said there was no reason the machine shouldn't work. When I phoned the gentleman back he said I had to phone the customer care centre for a call out appointment. I did this, they said he would phone me back today to arrange an appointment - which he didn't do. When I again phoned him he said I must contact him next week.
The reason given by Kreepy Krauly for not taking machines back is "they are used". Unfortunately I am not physic so I have to put it into my swimming pool before I know it is faulty.
All I want is a unit that works or a refund.
