I bought an etag and registered it online as soon as I returned from my annual vacation on 6 January 2014. My outstanding balance at that stage was approx. R47, which was deducted from my account, and left me with R3. So I promptly made a top up payment of R197 using my credit card, on Sanral's website. This amount never once reflected on my etoll account. The amount was shown as being in authorised status on my credit card for about a week before it mysteriously disappeared. So no deduction was made from my credit card account. On Thursday 9 Jan 14 I received an email from VPC, stating that I owe R210.63. No car registration number, no other details. Only my surname and the amount. I tried phoning VPC on Friday, spent 30 minutes on the phone just trying to get to the VPC department (options 1, 1, 4, 0). Option 4 did not work at all, and I kept going through to the customer care which could not help or transfer my call to the right department. I eventually gave up and sent an email. I even, to my surprise, received confirmation of receipt for this email! So big was my surprise when this morning, I receive the same handover email for R210.63!
