I ordered a T-shirt for my husband, and another for my one year old online. The parcel took over a month to arrive. I collected it today from the Benoni Post Office. The total value of goods was $44 (approx R450). I understand Customs Duty to be 10% plus VAT, and there is also a clearance fee of R30.00
I was charged R279.69 by customs (62%)!
According to the Post Office I must first pay for the goods (which I did) and then query the charges with customs - unfortunately they were not forthcoming with any contact details. How can I follow this up... surely this isn't right?! Is there any way to follow this up without returning the parcel to the postoffice, as this was for a gift.
