My son has petit mal (a form of epilepsy) the medication he is on, has thus far, not been effective in treating the condition. His doctor recommended that we put him onto a Ketogenic diet which has medically been proven to be incredibly effective in combating the condition (a 90% success rate). Discovery acknowledges that his condition is chronic and are happy to cover the meds, but have so far declined mine and his doctors application to have the diet covered (specifically all the supplements and blood testing strips) that I need in order to make sure the diet is both effective and safe for him.
It seems bizarre that a company that has a 'marketing' schplurb that professes prevention is better than cure, won't acknowledge the diet (although I do believe that they have covered some patients on this diet (according to my son's neural pediatrician)). The diet is a solution that will work over a two year period. If we are to follow the Discovery line in terms of treatment then they could very well be covering on-going medical costs for the rest of my son's life.
Surely they should cover any treatment for a chronic condition if it has been prescribed by the doctor!
