On Sunday the 27th January 2013 my family went to Aloe Ridge for lunch. I would like to commend the chef and waiters. The food, service and view was impeccable and very much enjoyed.
When we received the bill, Aloe Ridge had automatically added a 10% gratuity fee. Due to the fact we had waiters change shifts while we were there, we enquired if the previous waiter would get a portion of this.
To our utter horror we were informed that the waiters receive NO portion of the 10% gratuity which is added to each bill. This goes into Aloe Ridge's back pocket. We requested to speak to the hotel owner, Alex, to which we were told he was on a game drive and not available, only to bump into him in his office minutes later. To put it bluntly, his attitude sucked and all he could say was that he will lower the remuneration package of the waiters if there is a problem with charging this fee.
Alex FYI - Here is the definition of gratuity: Money, also known as a tip, given to one who provides services and added to the cost of the service provided, generally as a reward for the service provided and as a supplement to the service provider's income. (Service provider being the waiters).
