Liberty Medical Scheme
Chemotherapy authorisation

Let me start by saying thank you for covering about 98% of my fathers hospital, doctors and therapists accounts.
My complaint with your oncology department. My father has been diagnosed with Grade 4 Brain Cancer. They give him 6-8 months to live if he doesn't get radiation and chemo. We went to see the oncologist on 21 May. She recommended my father receive oral chemo and radiation. Told us it would take 2 weeks to get authorisation and she will be in touch. 2 weeks passed and nothing. I contacted the doctors office and they said liberty wouldn't approve the oral chemo which they suggest. Apparently they want additional testing done on the tumour removed to check if something is active. Doctor told us today NONE of the other medical aids have ever given her office such hassle re this chemo. This test they want done costs about R18k. On top of that the test takes 2 weeks and the pathologists say they might have to send it overseas to get tested. In the meantime my father tumour is growing which in turn means his DYING. Doctor told us that this chemo is a better chemo than the one the medical aid claims they will pay for. The more we waste time the more the tumour is growing
