Damage done by man hole to my ca

I was at the service station last night to buy petrol pound leaving I went into the spares shop at total and when I was backing out of parking the man halo cover knocked my exaught and broke it.when I ask the attendant what must I do he said there is nothing I can do cause its my on fault.but if you have a look at how high the cover is it will damage other cars too
