Have to pay for service

My service light went on about 10 days ago. I was out of town and so booked a service when I returned. When I took it to be serviced today they tell me that it was due for a service ages ago. Tried to tell both the dealership and bmw's call centre that the light only came on 10 days ago. It is still under motorplan but now they want me to pay for the service-unacceptable. I am about ready for an upgrade -think I will steer clear of bmw's going forward.
