Yesterday (26 May 2013), I went to buy lunch at Bellville Steers with a colleague.
When we got there I greeted this nice lady at the counter with a smile, but she returned that with silence and a straight face. She looked me straight in the eye.
I placed my order and paid at 13:30 and so did my friend, separately. We waited for what seemed to be hours. She served two other customers who came in way later than us. I complained and she said to me "Listen here" with a frown and she firmly explained that what I ordered takes 20 minutes to prepare.
But I said you don't speak to me like that. You don't tell me to "Listen here". You don't give me orders and you can't get angry when I inquire. I started to explain in frustration. We both started to raise our voices. We were basically shouting at each other in front of everybody. She went to the back and spoke to the lady at the Kitchen in Afrikaans, the other lady started laughing so hard that I didn't want to drop it anymore. I found it to be too rude to let go and so I also started speaking Xhosa to her. When she came to us and asked if we thought Coloured people were stupid, I could tell that she was preparing to cross a line. She p
