Ipping me off

I am disturbed and disgusted at the way standard bank handles their business.in 2008 I opened a student account with them in pe. I stopped using that account 2009 as I signed up with capitec bank. I recall being contacted once by standard bank about this account, on the 02 feb 2012 I decided I was closing all my accounts and unsettled debts. I went to standard bank in parow, sanlam centre. The consultant checked on their system and confirmed that my name was not on their system. I asked her to double check and explained the above with the intentions of paying off and closing this bank account. She assured me that the bank account was closed. I asked whether it was not handed over and she said no. I have been wondering what happened to this account because my cellphone number has not changed since passed matric.so today 26/02/2013 I get call from company called Debt Collections Management and they calling me on behalf of standard bank. Its the very first time I get their call and they tell me I owe a balance of R1745??? apparantly this account was handed over to them in August 2012 and the balance was R582?
