Cancelling my ppolicy without my consent

I was going through my bank account this morning and noticed the debit order for my insurance had not come off yet. I phoned to find out if there was a poblem and was told that my car and household insurance had been cancelled because my car was sold. That is news to me as I drove it this morning! Now I need to take my car for inspection again and I was told that I would have to pay my reinstatement fee. Luckily the call centre agent said that they would waive that else I would have gone to another insurance company right away.. I am really upset because I did phone last year after my house was broken into to check if everything was up to date on the pokicy but I never cancelled it. Strange that no email or anything was sent to confirm the cancellation. If something had happened and I needed to claim in the last two months I would not have been covered!! I am really disappointed. I would like to know how this could happen!!!
