My daughter applied for a loan for 2014 before the September deadline last year. Her status on the webpage in January was "being evaluated". NMMU George campus told me the same thing. On Friday 31st I phoned the NSFAS call center to ask what the status of the loan was, as the option had disappeared from the webpage.
The gentleman said that the deadline was the end of that day and my daughter would receive an SMS by the end of the day. She did not receive any communication.
On 1 February I picked up a blog on the NMMU web site indicating that only 365 first year students from NMMU had received funding. The blog further mentioned that preference is given to students who come from schools with the lowest quintiles. My daughter received 4 distinctions and was one of only 77 matriculants in George to receive and overall A pass. I was retrenched in April last year and my only source of income has been my provident fund payout. My daughter is thus academically deserving and poor, which is the criteria for receiving funding. I want to know what the status of my daughters application is. Is in the national interest of all South Africans to know how funding is allocated.
