RIDICULOUS CLOSING AMOUNT

I went to Absa bank last week as i wanted to close my cheque account (due to their ridiculous bank charges) the lady that is the consultant there told me that my closing balance will be R169.00 and she viewed my accounts and she told me i should go to the tellers when i come to close. today i went there and the consultant was busy with one of the bank employees, i was asked to wait outside for 15 minutes which i waited for longer than that bear in mind i went during my lunch hour.i went in without even being invited or welcomed in with a smile and sat down.i was told by one of the tellers that the consultant will help me explaining why i have to pay R2300.00 to close my account.the consultant then painfully (as she didnt even look like she wanted to help me) told me that its not her duty to explain to me why i have to pay such an amount and she said i have to go to the helpdesk, im saying to her after waiting for so long now i have to go and cue at customer services she didnt even give 2 shoes.i dont know why i have to pay r2300 and could she not have seen when i went there what to do to avoid paying such an amount.
