Standard Bank denies access to account information

One essential service of any bank is to keep record of your account so that if any situation may arise you are able to prove that money went in or out.

Today I again needed a proof of payment in order to prove that a payment was made and that the company received their money. Normally this is a pain free process and such a receipt can be printed from your internet banking, however, strangely today there was no records of any payments.

After investigation I found that the reason for this is that I had recently received a new card (old card had expired). What happens at standard bank is that all transnational information is linked not to your account but rather your card. Once a card gets stopped all records of transactions with that card gets stopped as well.

I phoned the bank to ask if they could not send me a proof of payment, but they could not help me. The call center assures me that the information is not deleted but that nobody will ever be able to access it. As a result I had to undergo the humiliating experience of sending my bank statements to the required people to prove payments.

I find this a very poor reflection of the thought that goes into Standard Bank services.
