I have been a customer of ABSA's since I was born as my aunt opened and funded a savings account for me I opened a checking account once I started working. In 2011 conveniently a week or so into December they sms me to inform me to FICA. I went to give my docs in at the Balfour Park branch which was another mission as they didn't want to accept what I deemed to be valid a proof of residence at first. After going back and forth it was finally sorted and my mind was at ease. A day or 2 before Xmas after finishing shift at 4am I go to the atm to withdraw funds and discover that they have frozen my account, I stay up to go to the branch and am informed that I didn't do FICA. They check their offices after I flipped and discovered that they didn't sent the doc where it needed to be. They un-freeze my account which I then wanted to cancel but was told I must go to Sandton to close the account as I opened it there. The account remained dormant for a couple of months as I didn't have the time or energy to deal with ABSA and eventually someone who was doing their job contacted me via email and closed the account!
