Internet banking transaction errors

On the 24th June 2013 I attempted to make an EFT payment to the Municipality for water/lights/rates and taxes. The transaction failed twice. The next day I did another transaction and this time it succeeded. I have made payments to this beneficiary MANY times before WITHOUT incident and therefore assumed all was OK.

Now looking at my municipal bill the amount did not reflect as credit and I've received extra interest and electricity disconnection charges. It turns out that there was a bug on the Internet banking website where the "My Reference" and "Beneficiary Reference" was swapped around. This was discovered after a lengthy telephone conversation with an ABSA telephone agent who then suggested I email [Email Removed] with my issue.

The reply to the above email stated that it is now MY problem, and a HUGE inconvenience to me, to phone the Municipality for them to credit my account and reverse the other charges incurred. And as we know, it's just a wonderful experience to deal with government institutions. Now I sit wondering whether my electricity will be cut because the bank swapped "My Reference" and "Beneficiary Reference"
