Account not closed as promised

I called the nedbank call center sometime in july 2012 to have my account closed.i was told the account was closed by the call center rep i spoke to.yesterday i receive a call from nedback saying that the account was overdrawn, i was really surprised because i normally get statements from them but i thought it was a as i don't even remember my account number anymore.i just delete those emails.i just feel like i'm not liable for any payments.my medical aid deposited money into that account before it was closed and according to my knowledge any balances should be settled.i took my time to call the call center and now this, why did it take them a year to call and tell me that my account is overdrawn.i do not have money, i can't pay for something i don't know.
