Vodacom's latest is they wait 4-5 hours before they inform you that you are approaching the limit of your data package. In that time, particularly with 4G, you can easily chew up multiple Gigabytes on their out-of-package rate of R1 per MB.
But you can cap your spend right?
Not really, because if you reach your voluntary data limit they suspend your phone. No calls or SMS's, even if you still have free minutes. You can't even call their 'free' numbers to get yourself back online, you have to drive to a 'Customer Care Center' (yea right) and stand in a queue.
So if you set your limit high to avoid standing in a queue with a dead phone, (even though you have airtime you have already paid for) they rip you as much as they can before telling you your data limit has been reached. If you set it low, welcome to queueing and their 6-hour reconnect time.

I synced a new iPad on the last day of the month, got billed R2, 000 and was without a phone for a working day. Their call centre's response? "Didn't you read the small print in the contract? " Which, by the way, specifically allows them to do all this.

Nice one Vodacom. It isn't as if you don't already make enough money out of us.
