ADSL INSTALLATION

I applied for do Uncapped Basic ADSL (1mb line) from Telkom about 3 weeks ago and paid a deposit of R700.
i was told it will be installed within 2 weeks. After a week, i got an SMS saying my telkom internet account has been activated with my username and password. Thereafter, i went to buy a router for about R1300, awating when the line will be installled.
After 2 weeks, i got another SMS from telkom saying that they would not be able to provide me with the service until the next financial year due to lack of infrastructure in my area (Midrand).

Why wasnt i informed of this earlier? What am i supposed to do with Router i bought?
