I am really shocked that this is possible, and wish to warn others:
I ended my contract with Cell C in December 2007. My number was ported to Virgin Mobile - only to receive a lawyer's letter 2 months ago to say that I still owe Cell C over R500.00. As it is more than 6 years later, I have not kept any paperwork. After the first shock, I told the lawyers concerned that my number could not have been ported if I still owed Cell C any money. I have not heard from them since.
Has this happened to anyone else? How do you prove your innocence? What is the time frame for collections? Can I sue them for costs incurred, defamation, and the trauma of trying to prove my innocence without the necessary paperwork? I only found this e-mail which at least gave me a clue to the date of termination:

Dear Sir/Madam
Please note that I would like to terminate my existing contract with Cell C with immediate effect. I am aware that a month's notice is required, and that my effective cut-off date will be January
