Cell Phone Contract

I support Autopage for the last 10 years. I got a contract 2 years ago and it is now time to upgrade. The contract that I had was big and I want to change it to a smaller contract or to pay as you go. The money on my current contract accumulate to R4 000.00. When I ask the people at Autopage what will happen to the money if I stop my contract to go on pay as you go or to change it to a smaller contract they say that I will loose all the money. I can't see how that can happen, because I paid for the package every month - it is just that I didn't use all the money. If I didn't pay for it then I can see that I loose all the money but this is not the case. Can someone please tell me how is this possible?
