Bad Service and stock delivery

About a week and a half ago I got a contract at MTN (R299 3gb uncapped
lite) product: Huawei e586. The very next day I returned the product because it was faulty as I have been told I have a 7day window to do so, since I returned it MTN has retained the product saying there is no stock at the moment. I said it was fine and I will wait the 2days (that was told by the stores staff) till the stock comes in. I am still waiting for stock to arrive.
I am not getting any joy out of MTN, as I have to use my phone as the modem and abusing my Samsung S3's battery and the phone itself inserting and removing the SIM card the whole time. Why should I pay my MTN contract if I do not even have the product to use it with and they cannot even provide me with an alternative for time being. The staff was helpful make no mistake, but they cannot promise me everyday that the stock is on its way.
Is MTN going to be liable for my cell phone's new battery and the petrol I have to drive out every time I want to know if they received stock as the 2 store numbers I was provided hardly ever get answered and my bill next because i do not even have the product to use but i have to pay.
