Cancellation Dates, prepaid converstion terms

I was quite shocked.

Decided to terminate my contract which matures 5 September 2013. Provided notice today - 2 Aug 2013..

Was informed that Vodacom will only allow me to cancel at the end of September 2013.

How can this be? How can I be forced to hold a contract for longer than the 24 subscribed month?

Further I'm told that if I want to convert to prepaid I have to recharge with a minimum of R29!

Where are these terms set contractually? Effectively Im being asked to pay a "non early" cancellation fee.
