Contract expiry

I would like vodacom to explaine to me in their own terms what the word "expiry" means, seems like I'm having a problem of definition with them. My contract is supposed to end today but to my unpleasant surprise, it can only be cancelled on the 1st of October. I want them to explaine to me on which grounds will they be expecting a monthly subscription since my contract has lapsed today. I am not willing to have my contract renewed, hence I have not ordered a new phone from them.
