Cell C
Excessive data roaming charges

From the 10th to the 26th June I visited the UK. I made sure roaming was activated for emergencies. At 6pm I received a text from Cell C that I have reached my monthly limit and that my line was now blocked for outgoing calls. In the coming days I contacted Cell C and requested that my limit of R150 be slightly increased to open up my line again. At this stage I was informed that they would increase the limit. The limit was however not specified. I proceeded as usual, using my UK based phone for day to day use and SA phone to as backup.

Receiving my bill of R7, 150, 70 (mostly for 35mb of data) for this little expedition came as a huge shock today considering my previous Vodacom contract roaming to UK for similar data came to about R600.

From my itemised billing it would seem as if Cell C only capped my account once R4, 000 had been incurred on the 10th. Not quite the R150 cap which I was expecting. Also I am astounded how my limit could jump from R150 to whatever it might be now to accommodate this bill without confirming the new limit with me or communicating at the time that R4, 000 and not R150 was the reason for blocking my line. What is the point of having the limit then?
